GasCraft

GasCraft adds various gases to the game, all of which are Forge Liquids, and also have a custom block implementation that expands and disperses. Gases have various uses, including fuel, poisoning mobs and other players, creating smoke screens (smoke grenades included), creating huge fires and explosions, and anything else you might be able to come up with.

If you've already started a world, and want to use GasCraft with it, don't worry, GasCraft features retro-get which will add important resources to already generated chunks.

Note that you must install Emasher Core in order to install GasCraft.
Please also note that many of the screenshots feature blocks from other mods, especially BuildCraft and Thermal Expansion in order to demonstrate what GasCraft can do, it is highly recommended that you install these mods as well if you install GasCraft

The included gases are:
Natural Gas (fuel, explosive, poisonous)
Propellent (ingredient, flammable)
Hydrogen (fuel, explosive)
Smoke (ingredient, blindness)
Weaponized gas (weapon)
Deadly Neurotoxin (weapon)

If enabled in the config file, small pockets of gas will be generated underground and will expand and harm any player or mob in the area if they are exposed to it. Currently there is no way of detecting them before you accidentally flood your mine with gas (although this is panned), but you can craft a gas mask which will protect you from any harm while it lasts.

Each type of gas comes with a different method for obtaining it. One of the most important gases in the mod, natural gas, can be obtained via a fracking system by pumping water (or slickwater) into a special machine that sits on top of special blocks on the bedrock layer to pump the gas out into some sort of Forge compatible pipe system. As an added bonus, you can also obtain BuildCraft oil this way. Another gas you may want to obtain for fuel is hydrogen, which can be obtained by processing algae (generated in Forge BiomeDictionary SWAMP and JUNGLE biomes) in a photobioreactor. Smoke can be obtained by placing chimney blocks over an active vanilla furnace, and then collecting it via a fan. The various other types of gases are obtained by refining the other types, more information is available on my wiki.

Both natural gas and hydrogen can be burned in BuildCraft combustion engines, or Railcraft steam boilers (note there is a bug causing these to not currently work with Railcraft steam boilers) to obtain energy. Natural gas and hydrogen will explode when they come into contact with fire, (or just a torch in hard mode), and propellent will act as a fuel to start more fires when it contacts fire. Natural gas will also poison you, and make you sick. Smoke will blind any entity it touches for a short time, and weaponized gas and deadly neurotoxin will cause massive damage to entities it comes into contact with (deadly neurotoxin being more powerful).

GasCraft also features Sockets, which are blocks designed to make your tech builds more compact. The sides of sockets can be configured using a BuildCraft compatible wrench (crescent hammer, omni-wrench, etc.) to control whether they accept, or output items, liquids, or energy, or nothing, and which internal tank or inventory they are associated with (there are 3 internal inventories and tanks, but only one capacitor for power). By shift clicking with the wrench, you can control whether a given side outputs a redstone signal or not. This of course will allow you to pass different items, liquids and energy through the same block, which allows you to make your builds much more compact. They also serve the purpose of plugging holes in walls created by pipes and wires that do not already have some form of cover system. Currently only MJ (BuildCraft energy) is supported for energy. Items also currently do not auto eject into pipes and inventories from the output, and must be pumped out. Liquids however, do auto eject if they can. I have plans to greatly expand this feature in the near future completely overhauling sockets and making them compatible with more mods (currently I want to support IC^2 and Applied Energistics), as well as expanding many more of their features. I may even move them into a separate mod.

Perhaps you want to acquire natural gas or BuildCraft oil via fracking on the bedrock layer. What better way of doing this than to use a BuildCraft quarry to expose large amounts of bedrock so you can find the gas and oil more easily. However, you probably also want to fill your quarry with water, and that's always a pain to get rid of. GasCraft has a solution. You can craft a tool called a handboiler, which can clear out large areas of liquid water, or melt ice and snow within a certain radius of its use. If you hold down shift, it can even smelt any blocks it encounters that can be smelted. Those that can be smelted into blocks will remain as blocks in the world, those that turn into items will drop as items. This makes it perfect for mining large mineral veins (especially coal) very quickly. It will break after 64 uses though, so don't go too crazy.

As an added bonus, you can also craft spray paint using propellent, which you can use to paint any type of wooden planks registered in the Forge ore dictionary, any of the 16 Minecraft colours.
