Looking for a version that has a wealth of mods to build out modpack, we like focusing on biome exploration, magic, interesting machines and industry (the oil refining process is so satisfying) as well as a more robust combat/dungeon exploration experience.
For us that was 1.12.2 but I'm wondering if a newer version has emerged that has the mod support that, that version had.
However, since then, newer versions of Minecraft have been released, such as Minecraft 1.16 and 1.17, and there might be more mod support and options available for these versions. Keep in mind that the modding community is continually evolving, and mod availability can change over time. To find out the current status of mod support for the newer versions of Minecraft, I recommend visiting popular Minecraft modding websites, forums, or communities. Websites like CurseForge and Planet Minecraft are excellent resources to browse and search for mods compatible with different Minecraft versions. Remember to always check the compatibility of the mods with the specific Minecraft version you intend to use, and make sure to back up your world and data before installing any mods to avoid potential issues Golfbirdie. Additionally, some modpack launchers, such as Feed The Beast (FTB) or Twitch Desktop App, offer curated modpacks that include a selection of compatible mods for a more convenient and stable modded experience. So, if you're interested in exploring newer Minecraft versions, I encourage you to check out the modding communities and see what exciting modpacks and mods are available for the version you want to play.

1.12.2 is still kinda king.
However versions 1.16.5 and above are closing the gap and sooner or later they'll surpass 1.12.2
