Hmm, I was using the latest version for 1.12.2, forge 2854 with optifine and it worked. I don't think your laptop couldn't handle the mod, I would be more likely that it wouldn't handle many mods at once than a single mod.
EDIT: that actually worked - but it still makes no sense why a mod would need optifine in order to work, especially with a crash relating to the inventory.
