posted a message on ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401QM Driver Issue

[Just for reference, putting this under "Other" as while I'm trying to fix this issue since it's a problem for Minecraft, it inherently is a Driver issue.]

Hello, I've been searching for a solution to a driver issue I've had when trying to run Curseforge Minecraft for a few days now, and I'm hoping to receive some help.

To start off the inherent issue is that Curseforge Minecraft crashes with

"# JRE version: OpenJDK Runtime Environment Microsoft-8035246 (17.0.8+7) (build 17.0.8+7-LTS)
    # Java VM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM Microsoft-8035246 (17.0.8+7-LTS, mixed mode, tiered, compressed oops, compressed class ptrs, g1 gc, windows-amd64)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C  [atio6axx.dll+0x190590]".

The key here is the problematic frame "# C  [atio6axx.dll+0x190590]", which while looking through a few forums and google links you find easily relates to the amd/ati drivers on a computer. There are a number of solutions that have worked for other people, but specifically do not work for the G14 GA401QM.

The first path that will not work is trying to update your AMD Drivers. If you update your AMD Drivers through the Windows 10/11 Auto Detection software or AMD Catalyst you'll be told by the software that it ran into an issue or cannot continue because of embedded drivers. The AMD Driver installer will lead you to their website for possible causes and solutions, of which none of them seem to have actually been the problems and none of the solutions work. After doing some digging, what seems to be the problem is that the G14 GA401QM does not have software that can be updated by the main like AMD software, and instead you need to update your AMD Drivers not through AMD themselves but ASUS.

This path however still fixes nothing. If you use the latest version of the chipset only driver for AMD provided by Rog Asus or Asus Support then you'll get the exact same issue, and if you try to backtrack to an older version you'll get an error that you have a TON of dll files missing.

The last thing to go over is manually replacing the atio6axx.dll, which you can find on dll-files.com, and after painfully taking hours to find the original dll files (there are 2 atio6axx.dlls) because I did not think to view hidden folders and finally replacing them you get a 1114 error. Which means it failed to initialize. This error is usually fixable by changing your computer's setting (through windows, amd, or nvidia) to be on maximum performance mode instead of any other mode, however that does not fix it in this scenario. Once you reach this point it is actually an issue that is more likely to affect plenty more programs, and was actually quite the pain to fix as even after doing a factory reset without saving any files it did not fix it. I ended up having to go into device manager and uninstalling the AMD Radeon Graphics Display Adapter and then reinstalling it through the chipset or surprisingly it can be done by using the AMD Installer, even though it fails at a certain point.

There a few other things I tried such as running Command Prompt in Admin mode and running dll file fixing commands I found on plenty of the forums when researching the issue, attempting to run it with the AMD Radeon Graphics disabled (which led to it simply not running at all), and at one point when I had the AMD Radeon Graphics uninstalled Microsoft even installed back a Windows Display Driver during restart but that did not work either.

Besides these correlating directly to what I believe the problem is, I've also attempted updating everything through MyAsus, updating Java, using a forge installation directly in the Minecraft launcher, etc.

Right now I've fully reset my computer regular Windows and am currently running off the latest Chipset Driver from the Rog Asus and Asus Support websites, and have the atio6axx error. There are probably a couple other things I've tested that I just can't remember, but this is the large sum of all the attempts I've made only to find that there seems to be no way for the ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401QM to run Curseforge, and it worries me that there may be other programs that will also run into this issue since it is Driver related.
