Grue
If you've ever played any of the games in the classic Zork trilogy (which was popular around the 80's), you've probably encountered the Grue, silently killing you because you were inside a dark room. Well, now that monster appears in Minecraft, haunting you there!
What this mod does is adding a new mob called "Grue", whom spawns close to a player if they're in an area where the light level is 2 or lower (simply standing still will only make more of them spawn). The Grue is immortal, and deals almost infinite damage (so there's no way to survive it if you get hit). But there is one way to banish it, which is as simple as getting into a place where the light level is higher than 2, in which case the Grue bursts into a plume of smoke, eliminating the threat for now.
This mod was made so that Tedyhere could use it in an adventure map, but that doesn't mean anyone else can't use it and feel the pain and suffering from being killed by these monsters.
Here's a couple of mod showcases of Grue:

Configuration
Grue comes with a variety of configuration options to enhance your experience:
Daylight Grue:
Enable this if you want Daylight Grues to appear where the light level is 14 or higher. They deal 3 hearts of damage per hit, and die when the light level is below 14 (like how the regular Grue dies when the light level is above 2). Minecraft restart required!
B:"Daylight Grue"=false
Display Warning Text:
Toggles whether or not to display the warning text when in dark areas. Client-side only!
B:"Display Warning Text"=true
Dynamic Lights Mode:
If this is enabled (client and server), you will be able to repel Grue with handheld light sources while AtomicStryker's Dynamic Lights is present. It will be on a per-player basis, so if Player A has Dynamic Lights installed, but Player B doesn't, Player A will be able to repel Grue with a handheld light source, while Player B won't.
B:"Dynamic Lights Mode"=false
Grue dimension whitelist:
Toggles the Grue dimension whitelist (used to force the Grues to only spawn in certain dimensions). This can be useful if you want to restrict Grue spawning to specific dimensions (the whitelist applies to both the regular Grue and the Daylight Grue).
B:"Grue dimension whitelist"=false
Grue spawn timer:
Change the value to increase the time it takes before a Grue spawns. Minimum is 10 seconds, and maximum is 30 seconds.
I:"Grue spawn timer"=10
Whitelist:
Add dimension IDs to this list if you want Grues to spawn here. Only used if Grue dimension whitelist is enabled!
I:Whitelist <
0
>
Wimp mode:
Toggles wimp-mode, which reduces the Grue's damage output to 3 hearts (a 6.505213034913026604750013415713e-19th of the default). Another thing this does is the Grue no longer deals armor-piercing damage.
B:"Wimp mode"=false
IMC
If you want to override the dimension whitelist so that Grues always spawn in a specific dimension, you can do so with the following code:
FMLInterModComms.sendMessage("grue", "registerDimensionWhitelistOverride", String.valueOf(DIM_ID));
Where DIM_ID is the dimension ID you want to register a whitelist override for.

how do we config
In reply to unGGed:
Otherwise, if that doesn't work, just go to %appdata% and in .minecraft, there should be a config file with the mod's name. Open it in a text editor like Notepad and You're done! This works for EVERY mod that has a config file, though you may need to restart your Minecraft when doing so.
A config option to enable the grue spawning at the surface during the night would be nice; it would work great with Hardcore Darkness!
May I ask you kindly, if you please could make a version of grue, where he dont oneshot-kill a player? I know, that you made him for a purpose that strong for an adventure map.
I want to have him on my private server with a friend. And we love the idea of how you made this monster as immortal and that he only creeps around in the very dark right next to the player. But it annoyed us just, that he deals that much damage.
My only suggestion is, that you could just lower his damage that makes him needs to punch the player like 4 - 5 times, until the player dies. We would love this more and it makes him even creepier, when he hits you, and you try to get away from him, but he is hunting you in every corner and hits you. It's kind of more horror and panicking, than just a one-hit-kill.

Yeah, maybe I should read more often descriptions ^^
I'd like an option to make it so the grue wont attack you if you have a night vision effect on you

I love this mod but the shuffling noise that it plays when idle is annoying.
Could there be a way to disable that?
i added the nether to the whitelist but the grue dont spawn there. i even tried the spawn egg & it just disappears into a poof of smoke.
EDIT: forgot to mention that im using the latest 1.7.10 version.
In reply to partyghoul2000:
I dont understand the whitelist..
You specify a code for Whitelist, and it should look like this by default?
FMLInterModComms.sendMessage("grue", "registerDimensionWhitelistOverride", String.valueOf(The_Beneath));
Where do i input that? In the config file, but where exactly? Thank you. <3
In reply to Cyntax:
Heya,
any chance you could allow spawn times to be less than 10 seconds?
Cheers!

That could be arranged. However, I would need a number (not 0, since that means instant death if it's dark).
